StreamPlayer Program Guide Failure
« on: March 22, 2009, 11:10:42 AM »

The symptom is that when bringing up StreamPlayer initially all programs are present. Within 5 minutes all programs associated with SAP advertisements emitted on the standard SAP IP address will disappear from the list.

The problem is associated with the service Bonjour. The description of this service is:

Bonjour allows applications like iTunes and Safari to advertise and discover services on the local network…..

This service is automatically loaded via an iTunes or Safari update.

The problem is (apparently) Bonjour is hijacking and shutting down StreamPlayer’s use of the multicast socket. We are not aware of any possible modification of StreamPlayer to mitigate this issue. The simplest fix is to shutdown Bonjour and remove it from Automatic start. This can be done via the Control panel->Services menu. The customer could also move all SAPs from the default multicast address to an alternate multicast address.
